Chapter 12

So. Pedro Silva and the Cavalcante crime family.

Hooooo boy. Things were about to get… Well, complicated would be the least violent way of putting it.

It had taken a while for August to get a handle on the politics of organized crime when he was first getting his feet wet as a hitman. Someone like him, while in a squint-to-see-it similar line of work to the mafia, was considered an outsider, not the sort of person a family would rely on unless they were desperate or meddling. Hiring Ricardo, which August presumed Pedro had done before things turned sour between them, would have been very expensive but worth it to someone who wanted to ensure that their target was handled swiftly and with no links back to the people who’d done the hiring. Everything of lesser importance was kept in house, and that house was kept in order. Seriously, you didn’t fuck with the guy running things and you didn’t go behind their back, because if you got caught…

Well, Bruno Cavalcante had been caught stepping out of line, and he’d paid with his life.

Honestly, August had done a great job of steering clear of the East Coast mafia organizations for the most part. Given his predilections—jobs that paid extremely well that targeted extremely rich assholes—he wasn’t the perfect fit for working with the mob.

Ricardo, on the other hand, not only had a reputation that preceded him, but he oozed vicious-minded, bloody-handed competence. It was no wonder Silva had hired him for a job.

The wonder was that Ricardo hadn’t completed it.

August hadn’t asked, and he wasn’t planning to. A part of him was desperate to know what had been bad enough to make Ricardo balk, but he trusted his partner. Besides, right now really wasn’t the time to reminisce about anything from “back in the day” when Mrs. Back In The Day was literally staying in one of their guest suites.

Mind in the game. You’ve got to convince Silva not to shoot on sight, after all.

Which meant that the best place to start was the most obvious one—the “don’t shoot the rich douchebag because it’s more trouble than you want to call down on yourself” gambit.

Hell, it had worked for August last time. It would probably work again.

He straightened the lapels of his Kiton K-50 bespoke suit and grinned. Commissioning this garish monstrosity had nearly cost him the privilege of ordering any suits from Antonio’s stores, but it was worth it. The fit was superb, the fabric was top of the line, the stitching was exceptional…and it was the color of a swimming pool.

This suit was a shade of aquamarine that seared the eyes, and August might be trim, but anything in this color big enough to fit him was more than big enough to make everyone around him wince. He’d done his best to tone it back with the plain white shirt and semi-casual loafers, but there was no excuse for an outfit like this except pure, unadulterated hubris.

Perfect for Augustus.
